Instillation of Eye Drops
Before Instilling Your Eye Drops
- Always wash hands with soap and water before and after the handling of eye drops
- Store eye drops in a cool dry place
- Read the label to ensure you have the correct eye drop
- Ensure that the tip of the drop bottle does not come into contact with the eyelashes or the eye as this will contaminate the bottle
- Do not press on the eye at any time
- You may find it easier to put drops in whilst you are sitting or lying down
Instilling Your Eye Drops
- Tilt your head back and look up
- Use your finger to gently pull down the lower eyelid of the eye
- The eye drops should be instilled into the space between the eye and the eyelashes
- Place the tip of the bottle close but ensuring that you do not touch the eye.
- Squeeze the bottle gently so that one drop goes into your eye, then release the lower eyelid
- Now close your eye
- Do not blink or rub your eye
- If more than one drop is due at the same time, wait 5 minutes before instilling the next drop
- Dab any excess moisture with a clean tissue
