Instillation of Eye Drops

Before Instilling Your Eye Drops

  • Always wash hands with soap and water before and after the handling of eye drops
  • Store eye drops in a cool dry place
  • Read the label to ensure you have the correct eye drop
  • Ensure that the tip of the drop bottle does not come into contact with the eyelashes or the eye as this will contaminate the bottle
  • Do not press on the eye at any time
  • You may find it easier to put drops in whilst you are sitting or lying down

Instilling Your Eye Drops

  1. Tilt your head back and look up
  2. Use your finger to gently pull down the lower eyelid of the eye
  3. The eye drops should be instilled into the space between the eye and the eyelashes
  4. Place the tip of the bottle close but ensuring that you do not touch the eye.
  5. Squeeze the bottle gently so that one drop goes into your eye, then release the lower eyelid
  6. Now close your eye
  7. Do not blink or rub your eye
  8. If more than one drop is due at the same time, wait 5 minutes before instilling the next drop
  9. Dab any excess moisture with a clean tissue

Wash your hands again with soap and water to remove any residue
